Three adults and two children suffered serious injuries in the crash on Wednesday, Oct. 30, a state police spokesperson said. Troopers responded to the wreck on Route 347 South in Maurice River Township at around 3:27 a.m.
Investigators said a Subaru Legacy rear-ended a Volvo XC60 near milepost 7. The Volvo went off the right side of the road and struck a tree, while the Subaru went off the left side of the road and into a ditch.
A GoFundMe page said 53-year-old Joseph Lowry was the Volvo driver, 37-year-old Alexandre Shepherd was the front passenger, and 51-year-old Jennifer Lowry was a back passenger with Shepherd's two young daughters. All five victims were from the Villas.
The GoFundMe had raised more than $15,500 from at least 188 donations as of Monday, Nov. 4.
"Thankfully, everyone survived, but they came away with some serious injuries that are going to take a while to heal," wrote Gabriella Grey, the fundraiser's organizer. "There’s a lot of physical pain and emotional weight from everything that happened, and it’s going to be a long journey to get back to normal."
The three adults were sent to a trauma intensive care unit and the two girls were in a pediatric ICU.
"These injuries aren’t something that will heal overnight, so recovery means weeks—and likely months—of working hard and staying hopeful," Grey wrote. "Adjusting to this new routine is tough on everyone, but we’re committed to getting through this together, one day at a time."
The GoFundMe claimed the Subaru driver was drunk during the crash. Troopers didn't identify that driver and no charges were announced as of press time.
The crash remained under investigation.
